Animal is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language action drama film directed and edited by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Pranay Reddy Vanga and Saurabh Gupta. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, Rashmika Mandanna and Tripti Dimri. In the film, Ranvijay “Vijay” Singh learns about an assassination attempt on his father and sets out to exact revenge.

A month after its release, Beast has moved once Shah Rukh Khan’s first immolation of 2023, Pathaan, and has amassed over INR5.4 billion in India. As per Bollywood Hungama, the film has crossed the INR9 billion mark at the global box office. The film, starring Ranbir, Anil Kapoor, Rashmika Mandanna, and Bobby Deol in vital places has made captions for its rather problematic script.

The film broke several box office records for a Hindi film, including the highest non-holiday opening, biggest single days, highest opening weekend, and highest opening week in India. At the overseas box office, it broke several records and eventually emerged as the highest-grossing Indian film in Australia and Canada. It grossed ₹887.69 crore (US$110 million) worldwide and emerged as a major commercial success becoming the third highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, the fifth-highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, 9th highest-grossing Indian film of all time, and the highest-grossing A-rated Indian film of all time. It also became the highest-grossing film of Kapoor’s career, surpassing the lifetime worldwide collection of Sanju (2018).

Famed filmmaker, Karan Johar, however, has termed it as the best offering of the year. “People have come up to me after I spoke about how much I loved Animal, and said, ‘You have made Rocky Aur Rani,’ That’s the vaccination for a film like Animal. It’s the opposite extreme. I said that I could not disagree with you more, because Animal to me is the best film of the year,” Karan was quoted by Hindustan Times

“It took me a while to reach this statement and a lot of courage because when you are around people, you fear judgment. Like during the time of Kabir Singh, which I also loved… I was like I am going to say this and I am going to get dirty looks from certain people but I don’t care anymore,” he added.

The director then detailed why he loved Animal so much. “I loved Animal for its front-footed, absolutely conviction-based narrative storytelling, breaking grammar, breaking myths, breaking everything that you think conforms to mainstream cinema. Suddenly you have an interval block where the hero is getting bashed up and everyone’s singing a song… I am like, ‘Where have you seen a sequence like this?’ It’s genius.”
