President Arif Alvi dissolves National Assembly on PM Imran’s advice

President Arif Alvi on Sunday approved the advice of Prime Minister Imran Khan to dissolve the National Assembly after a summary was sent by the premier in the wake of a no-trust move against him.

“The President of Pakistan, Dr Arif Alvi, has approved the advice of the Prime Minister of Pakistan to dissolve the National Assembly under the Article 58 (1) read with Article 48(1) of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” said a short statement by the President’s Secretariat.

“The president shall dissolve the National Assembly if so advised by the prime minister; and the National Assembly shall, unless sooner dissolved, stand dissolved at the expiration of forty-eight hours after the prime minister has so advised,” states Article 58 of the Constitution.

In the aftermath of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s address to the nation, Fawad Chaudhry also earlier said the federal cabinet stands dissolved and the premier will continue his duties under Article 224 of the Constitution.

The premier revealed this during an address to the nation after the “unconstitutional dismissal” of the no-confidence motion against Imran by Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri, citing Article 5-A.

In his address, the premier congratulated the nation on the dismissal of the no-confidence vote against him citing that the opposition was moved by a foreign-funded conspiracy and the speaker had thwarted the “attempt of changing the regime and the foreign conspiracy”.

Imran told the nation to prepare for elections. “Not foreign power or corrupt elements, but only you have to decide for this country,” he said while addressing the nation. Imran said that after the dissolution of the assemblies, the process for a caretaker government will commence.
