Peshawari chappal Trend In At This Eid
The Peshawar Chappals is very common in various parts of the subcontinent including Pakistan, Afghanistan and some regions of India. The Chappals are known by various names depending on the region, such as ‘saplai’, ‘kayray’or ‘peshawarichappal’. Peshawari Chappals are part of the culture in this region, worn at weddings, celebrations or even every day use, since any celebration is incomplete without the addition of the Peshawari Chapppal into the attire. Being a reasonably priced and locally sourced product, and because of its durability, people use to wear Peshawari Chappals in their daily life. While the exact origin of the ‘Peshawari Chappal’ is debatable, it is commonly associated with the city of Peshawar or Charsadda.
The Peshawari chappal is a traditional type of footwear of Pashtuns, worn especially by Pashtuns in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region. The shoe takes its name from the city of Peshawar, where it originates. While chappal is the word for flip-flops or sandals in Urdu, locals in Peshawar call the Peshawari Tsaplay . The shoes are worn by men casually or formally, usually with the shalwar kameez. Because of their comfort, they are worn in place of sandals or slippers in Pakistan. In March 2014, the Peshawari chappal became the centre of a global fashion debate when Sir Paul Smith made a similar shoe, which sold for £300. This prompted complaints on social media that the design appropriated the culture and craft of its original Pakistan makers.
The centuries old Peshawari Chappal homemade footwear tradition of Pakhtoon society, are attracting customers of all ages from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including merged areas to profitable market of Peshawar. Many consumers, belonging to other districts, have trekked long distances to buy decent, shiny and unique designs for themselves and their family members. Besides its cultural relevance, one contributing factor to the increased preference for durable readymade chappals is the skyrocketing costs of foreign footwear, which the salaried, middle class and low-income groups can barely afford. The distinctive footwear is exported to South Africa, the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Europe, Afghanistan and Russia moreover is appreciated in Sindh, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir, Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan.
