Pakistan to import petrol, diesel from Russia

Russia will provide Pakistan with petrol, diesel and crude oil at discounted rates, State Minister for Petroleum Musadik Malik announced Monday.

In a press conference in Islamabad, Malik said he wanted to congratulate the public on a successful visit to Russia, calling it “more successful than our expectations.”

Speaking with journalists, Malik said the country needed one percent more energy to meet the demand.

According to officials, Russia did not have LNG. Talks with the Russian government were still being held about importing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and it was also engaging with private firms for importing LNG.

During talks on pipeline projects, Moscow asked Pakistan to first honour its commitment to the flagship project of the Pakistan Stream Gas Pipeline (PSGP) – from Karachi to Lahore. The Pakistani delegation proposed changing the model of the PSGP project and said it was committed to fulfilling all conditions under the GtG agreement, including provisions of their shareholding settlement which would be finalised soon.

Officials agreed that there needed to be an increase in commodity production in order for Pakistan to become more sustainable and self-sufficient. They said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had directed that the country should be made self-reliant in agriculture during his recent visit.
