Gangubai Kathiawadi Movie Review
Young Ganga is tricked by her boyfriend with the promise of a film career and persuaded to leave the countryside for Mumbai. In Mumbai her dreams of a film career come crashing down and she is lured to the underworld. Based on Hussain S Zaidi’s novel Mafia Queens Of Mumbai, the film elaborate the life of the then President Of Kamathipura, Gangubai Kathiawadi, the movie is about her journey from the time she was forced into prostitution till the day she gave thousands of ladies in her business the gest and right to live life unapologetically and not be ashamed of who they are. most crucially, the very youthful and very fair-and-lovely Alia Bhatt playing the lead character who says she is 27 years, but looks younger, and much less marked by her horrific life experiences of having been sold into prostitution.
Synopsis
NGUBAI KATHIAWADI is the story of a woman who is journey started from being a prostitute to being a leader of the oppressed. The story gear up in the early 50s. Ali Bhatt as Ganga Harjivandas basically belongs to Kathiawad and want to be a successful actress. Her boy friend Varun Kapoor as Ramneek gave her promised that he will help her to get some mail role in big hindi films, she decided to leave her location with her boy frined and run away to bombay. In Bombay, he takes her to a brothel, run by Sheela (Seema Pahwa). This is when Ganga is told that Ramneek has sold her to Sheela for Rs. 1,000. After she sleeps with her first client, something changes in her. She renames herself Gangu. In no time, she becomes rebellious, much against the will of Sheela. Soon, Sheela passes away and Gangu takes over the business. She realizes that she needs to win the elections of the Kamathipura Association to turn the ride of the 4,000 sex workers residing in the red light area. However, doing so won’t be a cakewalk. Gangubai’s opponent is none other than the very powerful Razia Bai (Vijay Raaz). What happens next forms the rest of the film.

The main beauty of the movi based in the moments, dialogues and the selection of the time, Sanjay Leela Bhanasali is a producer with unique concepts and the only one who make movies to inspire him not others. His mind always looking for grandeur and aesthetics in everything and every time his leading lady flips her hair, you see it. Gangubai Kathiawadi is story about very simple women with innocent wishes, the women which pushed into drake side of the society but she made a goal to rise up their like hope of lights for others. and she achieve her destination.
Its the era in between 1950 to 1960 when very beautiful and bold young girl name Ganga has wish to became a super star actress and she told her wish to her boy friend Ramnik, He won Ganga trust that he will know someone in Bomby to get main roles in hindi film, on the basis of foil story she decided to run away with him but Ramneek has sold her to Sheela for Rs. 1,000. At first, she protests but later gives in and joins the flesh trade. After she sleeps with her first client, something changes in her. She renames herself Gangu. In no time, she becomes rebellious, much against the will of Sheela. Then she accept the reality and gave her self a challenge to get respectable level in the society for upcoming generation. Story revolve around that main concept.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s direction is first-rate. He ensures the viewers get zapped into the world of Gangubai and Kamathipura. He has given some accomplished films in the past and hence, one doesn’t expect an ordinary product from him. In this regard, he doesn’t disappoint. He has helmed the story beautifully and sensitively and has also added the grandeur the way only he could have achieved. Gangubai’s pain comes out very well and everyone can empathize with her. At the same time, for most parts, the film is not disturbing and is quite mainstream in its treatment. However, the romantic portion between Gangubai and Afsaan (Shantanu Maheshwari) could have been shorter as this is when the film gets a bit slow. The second half is engaging but for the single-screen audience, it doesn’t offer mass entertainment. Moreover, Gangubai is called ‘Mafia Queen’ a couple of times but she isn’t depicted as a mafia in any way.
The main beauty of the film to show the various stages of Gangu character from black to brighter side of the life. Alia Bhatt delivers arguably the best performance of her career. Many had reservations that age-wise, she is not correct for the part. However, Gangubai is shown to be quite young and hence, Alia fits the bill perfectly. And she gets into the skin of her character like never before.
Ajy Devgn only have 10 miniute appearance but his acting give the extra boost in film popularity. On the other hand Vijy Raaz break all the hinderance to show his acting skill even though he play very small role in the movi. Shantanu Maheshwari is adorable and will be loved. Varun Kapoor is decent. Jim Sarbh (Journalist Amin Faizi) is excellent. Indira Tiwari (Kamli), last seen in SERIOUS MEN [2020] is a surprise of the film. Rahul Vohra (Prime Minister) is decent.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s music is a big letdown. He is known for soulful and hit songs but not a single song of GANGUBAI KATHIAWADI registers. ‘Dholida’ is okay just due to the picturization. The same goes for ‘Meri Jaan’ and ‘Jab Saiyaan’. ‘Shikayat’ and ‘Jhume Re Gori’ are forgettable. Sanchit Balhara and Ankit Balhara’s background score is much better.
