Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is a Pakistani-Canadian journalist, filmmaker, and activist known for her work in films that highlight the inequality with women. She is the recipient of two Academy Awards, seven Emmy Awards, and a Knight International Journalism Award. In 2012, the Government of Pakistan honored her with the Hilal-i-Imtiaz, the second-highest civilian honor of the country, and the same year Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world. She holds the record for being the first female film director to have won two Academy Awards by the age of 37.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy has been awarded by a British human rights organization named The People’s Portfolio for “inspiring leadership, great courage, and compassion for fellow human beings” through her documentaries. There are very few people who made us proud in their field and lift the name of the nation. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy is one of them and deserves to be on the list.

The organization is founded by a lauded British portrait and documentary photographer named Platon. The aim of this human rights firm is to create a visual language that breaks barriers, expands dignity, fights discrimination, and enlists the public to support human rights around the world.

Taking to Instagram, the filmmaker shared her recent achievement.


“I’m honored that The People’s Portfolio will present me with the 2021 Inspiring Leadership Award in a virtual program on December 8th,” she wrote.“To amplify the stories and voices of women we need friends and partners that will help us advocate for change at all levels of society. The People’s Portfolio and its founder, Platon, are allies in the fight to change cultural norms that violate women’s fundamental human rights like domestic abuse, forced marriage, rape, so-called honor killings, and acid attacks around the world,” she further shared the details.

“I’m grateful for their partnership and I invite you to attend the virtual program on December 8th.”
